Seals Cup ’25: Round of 16 Roundup

After experiencing a thrilling 48 games in the group stages, the round of 16 for the seventh edition of the Sedals Cup kicked off on Tuesday, the 10th of June, 2025. On the one hand, the usual suspects—MBBS, I.P.E., Political Science, W.B.E., and Psychology—made it to this round. On the other hand, there were surprise qualifications—History and Economics—and surprise crashouts—Microbiology and Philosophy.

W.B.E vs. History

The first game in this round was a tense tie between Akinpade’s W.B.E. and a very motivated History side. Akandu’s first-half brace was enough to dispatch the Historians, who came out fighting tooth and nail in the second half but could only get a consolation goal for their efforts. The match ended two goals to one in favour of the tech boys and booked them a ticket to the quarter finals.

Civil Engineering vs. Economics

The second fixture of the day featured another set of tech boys taking on another very motivated side in Economics. This was probably the most nerve-racking game of the day, as Economics grabbed an early 1-nil lead and defended it until Civil Engineering’s midfield maestro Daniel broke it down with a well-placed shot to make it 1-all. Shortly after, Civil Engineering got another goal to complete their remontada. It seemed well away for the tech boys until Economics grabbed a last-gasp equalizer at the very death through a corner. The resulting penalty shootout ended 4-3 in favour of Civil Engineering, sending another tech side to the quarterfinals.

Pharmacy vs. I.P.E.

In the final game of the day, which featured yet another tech side, I.P.E. went up against Pharmacy. This game had chances aplenty, I.P.E. more than Pharmacy, but somehow both defenses managed to remain resolute throughout regular time. Another penalty shootout, another win for the tech boys. Dr. Show failed to convert Pharmacy’s sixth penalty, sending I.P.E. to the quarterfinals.

Physiotherapy vs. Political Science

On Wednesday, the 11th of June, 2025, the game between Physiotherapy and Political Science set things in motion. The Political Scientists got the first goal through Olami, their goalkeeper, from the 12-yard penalty spot. Physiotherapy quickly pulled one back through Dennis, and it seemed as though the College of Medicine side was poised to go all the way. However, the second half came, and they were blown to bits by a well-organized Political Science side, who scored three more goals to ensure their place in the next round. The goals came courtesy of Dannymiles, Stanley, and new signing Korede.

Human Kinetics (H.K.E.) vs. Psychology

The second game of the day was a keenly contested tie in which Human Kinetics edged out Emeka-led Psychology 2-1. The breakthrough goal came late in the first half for K.H.E. from a corner. Psychology struck back in the second half through Mahrez, but Roxy replied shortly after for K.H.E. to re-establish their lead. Psychology desperately tried to snatch an equalizer later in the game, but all their efforts proved futile.

Veterinary Medicine vs. Geology

Originally slated for 3:30 PM, the third match of the day started at exactly 4:00 PM. The animal doctors took the lead about midway through the first half, but the Rockites equalized through a corner kick just before the end of the first half. In the second half, Geology showed more grit to get another goal and defend their lead till the end of the game, effectively knocking out the animal doctors and booking their place in the quarterfinals for the first time.

MBBS vs. Chemistry

The closing tie for the day saw the student doctors go up against Chemistry. It was an uncharacteristically poor performance from MBBS, but they managed to do enough to dispatch the chemists and secure their place in the next round by winning 2-1. More details are here.

Agricultural Engineering (A.E.E.) vs. Petroleum Engineering (PET)

The final fixture of the round of 16 was held on Thursday, the 12th. In a game that saw two tech sides go against each other, it was thoroughly entertaining. Petroleum Engineering drew first blood through Joel less than five minutes into the first half. A.E.E. mounted pressure on the PET defense till it broke, and they conceded the equalizer. Both sides tried to extend their advantage, but ultimately the game went on to penalty shootouts. PET showed they wanted it more and edged out A.E.E. 8-7 on penalties.

With the quarterfinals set to kick off on Monday, the 16th of June, the competition has entered its direst stage. The pretenders have been separated from the contenders. It is left to be seen who will emerge champion this year.
