SEALS Cup ’25: Quarter finals Roundup

On the 16th of June, 2025, the Old SUB Pitch witnessed the quarterfinal action of the eight remaining departments in this year’s edition of the SEALS Cup. In case you missed it, this is how the games went down.

Geology vs Petroleum Engineering (PET)

The first match of the day was between Geology and Petroleum Engineering. This match was a classic example of the saying, “Results don’t tell the full story, but it is only the result that matter.” It ended two goals to nil in favor of Petroleum Engineering. For the Rockites, it was a tale of wasted chances after wasted chances, and it definitely cost them a place in the final four. Ajibola from PET capitalized on a defensive error late in the first half to get the opener, and again, against the run of play late in the second half, the tech side grabbed another goal to seal the victory.

Human Kinetics (H.K.E.) vs Wood & Biomaterials Engineering (W.B.E.)

The second game for this round kicked off at about 2:50 PM. It was a thrilling encounter of end-to-end football from both sides, with W.B.E. getting more of the chances in the first half through the usual suspects: Mjay, Akinpade, and Akandu, but the H.K.E. defense remained resolute. The second half was also not productive, although both teams came closer to scoring; W.B.E. struck the bar from a corner, and H.K.E. scored a goal that the referee deemed offside. The match eventually moved on to penalties, which H.K.E. won 5-4. H.K.E.’s win was in spite of W.B.E. goalkeeper Muhamzy’s heroics. He saved three penalties, but ultimately, it still wasn’t enough to secure his team a spot in the semifinals.

Industrial Production Engineering (I.P.E.) vs Civil Engineering (CVE)

The quarterfinal game of the day was between familiar foes, I.P.E. and Civil Engineering. The last time they met was at the finals of the Faculty of Technology Deans Cup, where CVE edged the orange boys. Recent history repeated itself as Heskeyman-led CVE knocked out V.K.’s I.P.E. I.P.E. had more of the ball for most of the game, but they couldn’t convert possession to goals. CVE, on the other hand, showed flashes of threat the times they went forward, drawing a double save from the I.P.E. goalie on one occasion in the second half. With the scoreline at 0-0 at the end of 60 minutes, the game headed into a penalty shootout.Daniel of CVE scored his side’s fifth penalty to ensure they won 3-1 on penalties to advance to the final four.

MBBS vs Political Science (POS)

The final game of the round was the most anticipated of the day. The student doctors edged out the political scientists by two goals to one to reach the semifinals for the third consecutive time in just as many times of asking. Detailed coverage of the game was done by UIMSA Press here

Now, all eyes are turned to Wednesday, the 18th of June, 2025, when the Old SUB Pitch will come alive again, as the final four; Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Human Kinetics, and MBBS slug it out to prove themselves worthy to call themselves finalists of the seventh edition of the biggest interdepartmental football competition in the University.
