IMSUMSA Suspended From NiMSA Activities for Ten-Year Period Following 48th MAK NiMSA Health Week

On the 16th of June, 2025, The NiMSA National Secretariat released an open letter to the general public, outlining the failings of the 48th MAK NiMSA Health Week, later christened ‘Gov. Hope Uzodinma NiMSA National Health Week 2025,’ and resolving to suspend the Imo State Medical Students’ Association for a ten year period, subject to an appeal at the Extraordinary General Assembly on June 29th, 2025.

This action follows what is described as “gross misconduct, financial misappropriation, violation of medical students’ rights, mental and emotional harassment, breach of privacy, and misplaced priorities committed (sic) by the organizers, medical students of the Imo State Medical Students Association (IMSUMSA) and some of their alumni during the poorly executed and concluded Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) MAK Health Week 2025.”

One Dr Franklin Olumba is accused of misappropriation of funds received from the Imo State Government and of usurping the power of the Local Organizing Committee led by Ikechukwu Onyechere and Chris Prosper. A number of events were reported to fall through in the course of the Health Week, including the NiMSA National Essay Competition, NiMSA National Debate Competition, Variety Night, Beach House Party, Tour of Imo State, Dinner and Award Night, and Pageantry.

Other points of contention highlighted in the release included inadequate meals, disrespect to the NiMSA Secretariat, eviction of delegates from hotel rooms, and breach of privacy of female delegates. Resolutions of the NiMSA Secretariat include reporting of the hotel staff member responsible for privacy violations to local law enforcement, plans to petition the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to revoke the license of Dr Franklin Olumba pending an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demands for refunds for delegates who did not attend the event or were denied services, a six-week suspension of Ikechukwu Onyechere, Chairman of the LOC, and the Inauguration of an Investigative Committee.
